Have you spotted the cheeky kōtare?
REPORT A SIGHTING
We have a situation.
A rather adventurous kōtare has been spotted flitting about Mid Canterbury, and more recently, Mackenzie Country — popping up in unexpected places, keeping a playful eye on little wanderers, and generally refusing to stay in one spot for long.
It was last seen near turquoise lakes, tussock-covered hills, sneaking bites of scrumptious-looking pies, and taking a dip in some very popular hot springs… without togs!
What We Know So Far…
-
It has excellent taste in scenery
-
It seems drawn to curious kids and family adventures
-
It may be quietly mapping out its favourite places across the region
-
It cannot, under any circumstances, be persuaded to sit still
Locals have started sending in sightings, but we’re convinced there are many more to come.
Spotted It? We’d Love to Know
If you’ve seen this wandering kōtare — whether perched or exploring — we’d love your report.
Where was it?
What was it up to?
Was it behaving suspiciously… or just being its usual charming self?
Every sighting helps us piece together its journey.
A Small Hint…
Between you and us, this kōtare isn’t just wandering aimlessly.
It has a habit of appearing in places that are well worth exploring — the kind of places that make you slow down, look around, and say, “we should come back here.”
Following the Trail
If you’ve made it this far, you might already be on the right track.
This particular kōtare features in my newest children’s book: Explore with Me Mackenzie Country.
A story inspired by incredible landscapes, local gems, and the joy of discovering Aotearoa's best with fresh eyes (and little legs), proudly supporting Te Manahuna Aoraki Project.
Feel Like Joining the Adventure?
If you’d like to follow along, you can:
-
Keep reporting sightings (hint: he's been spotted on the odd Facebook story)
-
Come along for the journey on social media
-
Or tuck a copy away for your own explorer (pre orders are now open)
And Just Quietly…
We’ve been so grateful for the kōtare spotters so far who are helping us track its travels.
Let’s just say… a small thank you may find its way to one or two keen-eyed explorers who send in a sighting.
Keep Your Eyes Open
This kōtare could turn up anywhere.
And if you do spot it… you know what to do.
Report a Sighting
Stay alert, explorers! We may email with exciting news, competitions or updates (very occassionally).
